Astromeritis Primary School is a public primary school which is located at Astromeritis village in the district of Nicosia. It is located 30 km far from the capital of Cyprus, Nicosia. The school is a non-profit organization that provides primary education to 107 pupils aged between 6-12 years and has 11 teachers. Our school is a mixture of traditional and modern architecture. It was built in 1941 and renovated recently, keeping the traditional architectural features, like the high-ceilings in the main buildings. Between 1965 and 2009 new, more modern-style classrooms were added. A number of our children (16) have special educational needs and they attend special education classes as well as speech and language therapy lessons. A large part of our students come from low socio-economic family backgrounds and some of them exhibit challenging behaviors. A large percentage of students are refugees from the district of Morphou. This is the first time our school is applying to a program for European partnership and therefore we endeavour to enrich our students’ social and cultural experience through their education, exposure, and communication with other schools in Europe. As a result we are looking for European school partnerships through Comenius, in order to accomplish our goals.
